Eye exam for children

When should your child have an eye exam?

Clinique d’Optométrie Bélanger provides children’s eye exams in Montreal for children and teenagers. For insured children under 18, one complete eye exam per year is covered by the RAMQ.

When there are no specific symptoms, the Ordre des optométristes du Québec recommends an eye exam around age 3, before starting school, and annually from ages 6 to 18. An appointment around 6 months of age may be recommended if you notice unusual signs or have concerns about your child’s vision.

What vision problems can affect children?

Strabismus (crossed or misaligned eyes), amblyopia (lazy eye), and refractive errors such as hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism can affect a child’s vision. Our optometrists can assess your child’s eyesight and eye health, even before they are able to read.

Early detection helps identify vision problems sooner and allows appropriate care or follow-up to begin. Prompt treatment can help reduce their impact on your child’s visual development and limit the risk of long-term complications.
