Tips for good eye health

Taking care of your eyes on a daily basis is important. Here are 6 easy courses of action to help you.

Do you watch a lot of movies?

Try as much as possible to position yourself at a distance of at least five times the width of your television screen.

Include/keep eye-healthy foods in your diet.

Foods containing vitamin C (kiwis, blueberries, strawberries, orange peppers…) or antioxidants such as lutein and beta-carotene (carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, broccoli…) can reduce, among other things, the risk of AMD and protect against the harmful effects of UV rays.

See your optometrist regularly.

He is in the best position to assess the health of your eyes because some eye diseases do not have easily detectable symptoms. He can also provide you with personalized advice.

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends an initial eye exam for children between 6 and 9 months, then an annual exam. For adults, the recommendation is one visit every two years unless otherwise directed by your optometrist.

Adopt the 20-20-20 rule.

In front of a computer screen, take a 20-second break every 20 minutes to look 20 feet away from you (about 6 meters).

Protect your eyes whether they are blue, green or brown.

Wear sunglasses outside even if the sun is not shining (UV is harmful all year round).

Wear appropriate eye protection if you are undertaking heavy work indoors or outdoors.

Do not hesitate !

If you feel any discomfort, irritation, inflammation, injury, don't assume it will go away on its own. This may require treatment or hide a more serious eye problem.

Always call your optometrist to ask if it is possible to have an emergency appointment, it is often faster than going to the emergency room of a hospital.
