Diagonale

We offer diffrent technics to slow down the natural evolution of myopia in children and in adults.

We have acquired an optical axial length measuring device (IOL Master). Thanks to this device, we can measure the length of the eye to assess the risk of progression of myopia and the risk of eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts and retinal detachments in adulthood. Also, we use this device to monitor eye elongation following selected procedures.

Our clinic is one of the leaders in Canada in the field of myopia control. We have used orthokeratology to slow myopia since 2006.

Among the techniques available to slow the progression of myopia and elongation of the eye, we use :

  • Orthokeratology: night lenses (appointment with Dr. Patrick Simard or Dr. Marcotte)
  • Custom contact lenses: gas-permeable multifocal lenses (GAS PAG), hybrid lenses, custom soft lenses, etc.
  • MiyoSmart ophthalmic lenses from HOYA
  • Myopilux Max and Myopilux Pro ophthalmic lenses from Essilor
  • Bifocal ophthalmic lenses adapted to eye morphology
  • Atropine

Orthokeratology

Technique of wearing a gas-permeable contact lens (RGP) at night to change the shape of the cornea. As shown in the following links, the central cornea becomes flatter and the peripheral cornea more bulging.

There are therefore 2 effects to this type of treatment :

  1. The central flattening of the cornea corrects up to 4.00 myopia diopters which allows the day to see well without glasses and contact lenses.
  2. Increased peripheral curvature slows the progression of myopia. Each year that the child wears the lenses reduces the chances of progressing to a high myopia.

Both effects are independent. If myopia is higher than -4.00, glasses with a low prescription will be required to correct what is missing, but the stabilization effect of myopia will be present.

Costs :

The adjustment fee is $300. It is necessary to count several follow-up visits to ensure the proper functioning of the treatment: 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and thereafter every 6 months. This fee is charged only for the initial adjustment. The adjustment fee is non-refundable.

Lenses are priced at $600 per pair for a life of 1 to 2 years depending on lens wear. If during the first 2 months, the treatment is not suitable or you want to stop, the costs of the lenses are refundable.

Two guarantees apply to this treatment :

  • breakage warranty: 6 months from the date of purchase
  • Adjustment guarantee: 3 months from the date of purchase (hence the importance of regular follow-ups at the beginning of treatment)

Note that the Ramq reimbursement program of up to $250 per child every two years, also applies for orthokeratology lenses.
